Canada Research Chair
Investigating how learners exercise agency in hybrid, algorithmic, and AI-mediated educational contexts.
The Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Learner Agency is held by Professor Jillianne Code at the University of British Columbia. The Chair investigates how learners act with purpose in educational environments increasingly shaped by algorithms, artificial intelligence, and institutional systems.
The Canada Research Chairs Program invests approximately $311 million per year to attract and retain some of the world's most accomplished and promising minds. The CRC in Learner Agency contributes to understanding how agency emerges through engagement, resistance, and choice within postdigital educational landscapes.
Developing a rigorous theoretical framework for understanding learner agency in postdigital contexts where human and algorithmic systems are deeply entangled.
Investigating how learners navigate hybrid educational environments, including AI-mediated, algorithmic, and platform-driven learning spaces.
Contributing to the Postdigital Science and Education book series and peer-reviewed journals in educational technology and learning sciences.
Translating research into accessible frameworks, tools, and resources for educators, policymakers, and the broader public.
